Breakfast with Sloths

Perched on the edge of the tropical rainforest in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, our hostel offered more than just a place to rest, it was a front row seat to the wonders of the jungle. The open air kitchen and balcony dining area sat just below the canopy, making it the perfect spot to observe rainforest creatures in their natural habitat. Morning coffee came with a soundtrack of birds and rustling leaves, and on most days, at least one three-toed sloth could be seen lounging in the nearby jungle trees, just meters away.

Tree Chilling

Some days, we spotted two or three, but our luck peaked when four sloths appeared at once, an incredible moment in one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems. Seeing these rainforest mammals up close, moving in their slow, deliberate way, was a dream come true. Many travelers visit the rainforests of the world hoping for a glimpse of a sloth, but here, it became part of our daily routine.

The tropical rainforest biome is the perfect sloth habitat, offering dense vegetation, towering trees and a complex ecosystem that supports an incredible variety of rainforest wildlife. From toucans flying overhead to the calls of unseen creatures deep in the forest, this was a place where nature surrounded you at every moment.

Manuel Antonio is one of the best places to see sloths in Costa Rica, both three-toed sloths and their close relatives, the two-toed sloths. For anyone wondering where can I see sloths in the wild?, this is it.

Beauty in the Grass
Hidden Bloom

Up near the top of Cunswick Scar, just a short walk from Kendal, the landscape can seem rugged, even barren at times. But for those who take the time to look closely, small wonders reveal themselves. Nestled among the long, thick grass, a pink wild orchid, the delicate Orchis Mascula, or early purple orchid, adds a striking splash of color to the muted tones of the fells.

The Lake District is known for its sweeping landscapes, but its smaller treasures are just as captivating. These wild orchids thrive in the hidden corners of Lake District hills, waiting to be discovered by those who walk slowly and observe carefully. Their vibrant petals stand in perfect contrast to the golden-brown grasses, a delicate reminder of the biodiversity that flourishes in even the most unassuming places.

For photographers and nature lovers alike, finding an orchid in the wild feels like uncovering a secret beauty, one that makes the effort of searching through the Cumbrian mountains all the more rewarding. Whether you're hiking the Lake District mountains or exploring its quieter trails, keep an eye on the ground. Amongst the grass, you may just spot a wild orchid in bloom.

Tropical Turtle

Gliding effortlessly through crystal-clear water, a hawksbill sea turtle moves with serene grace above the white sand below. The shallow, turquoise waters off Nosy Iranja create a dreamlike scene, where the patterns of gentle waves ripple across the ocean floor. Sunlight filters through, slipping between the crests, casting a warm glow on the turtle’s shell, nature’s own spotlight in this African paradise.

This is marine life at its most peaceful. A glimpse into the world of ocean wildlife, where time slows and the rhythm of the sea takes over. Floating above, the view is mesmerizing, tropical marine life in its natural state, untouched, undisturbed, gliding through warm salty waters off mainland Madagascar.

For those passionate about turtle conservation, moments like these serve as a reminder of the beauty worth protecting. The hawksbill turtle, an ancient traveler of the seas, faces threats from habitat destruction and plastic pollution affecting marine life. Seeing one in the wild is both a privilege and an inspiration, to appreciate, to protect and to ensure that the oceans remain a sanctuary for these incredible creatures.

Swimming in Paradise

If this doesn't make you long for the warmth of the ocean and the peace that comes with it, what will?

Basilisc Perch
Emerald Basilisk

Deep in the heart of the Costa Rican rainforest, the emerald basilisk lizard perches on a tree branch, its striking green profile standing out against the rich, verdant backdrop. With its crest extending from head to tail, the green basilisk is a true marvel of nature, its minty green spots breaking up its emerald-hued skin. The atmosphere is thick with the hum of the jungle, a world alive with sound, from the calls of distant howler monkeys to the rustling of unseen creatures in the dense foliage.

The wildlife tour along the Rio Negro was an unforgettable adventure, offering up the chance to witness these incredible lizards in their natural habitat, known for their ability to run on

water. The sight of a basilisk running on water is something else, a frantic scatter across the surface that seems almost too surreal to believe. Also known aptly as the Jesus Christ Lizard, they can move along the surface like this for 15 feet or more. But the experience didn’t stop there, kingfishers, spider monkeys, and caiman were also part of the vibrant jungle scene.

Every moment felt like a new discovery, a reminder of the wild reptiles and creatures that call this jungle home. Despite being sat, it really was exercise. With the forest so alive and thriving, there wasn’t a dull moment!

Peach Hibiscus

As we wandered down a remote jungle stream in Costa Rica, we stumbled upon a true tropical treasure, the Peach Hibiscus. With its delicate, soft hues and intricate petals, this flower exudes an elegance that is impossible to overlook. Its subtle beauty stood out against the lush backdrop of the jungle, capturing the essence of the forest's vibrant yet serene atmosphere.

Discovering a hibiscus flower in the wild is always a moment of joy. In the depths of the Costa Rican jungle, this beautiful tropical flower seemed to shimmer with the forest's natural energy. It’s a reminder of the simple yet profound wonders that flourish in untouched corners of the wild.

The Peach Hibiscus evokes a sense of paradise, its elegance often associated with tropical getaways and the warm, peaceful vibes of an island retreat. It’s a flower that not only captures attention but also stirs the imagination, reminding us of the serenity and beauty of nature’s most exotic blooms.
